How to Choose a Micron Rating for Industrial Liquid Filtration
Micron rating describes the approximate particle size a filter media is designed to retain. It is one of the most requested specifications in liquid filtration, but it should not be selected without process context.
Selection Guidance
When this matters
A smaller micron number does not automatically mean better filtration. Finer media can increase pressure drop, reduce service life and require more frequent replacement if solids loading is high. The right micron rating balances removal target, flow stability and maintenance cost.
What to compare
Nominal micron ratings are often used for general process filtration, while absolute ratings are used where retention performance must be more controlled. Buyers should confirm whether the application requires general particle reduction or a defined removal efficiency.
Common mistakes to avoid
For staged filtration, a coarser filter can remove larger solids before a finer cartridge or bag. This approach can protect the final filter, reduce pressure drop growth and improve total service life.
Information to prepare
When requesting a recommendation, provide the particle problem, current filter life, flow rate, liquid type, temperature and acceptable pressure drop.
